Cleaning Solutions for TimberTech Decking

It is crucial to use the correct cleaning solutions for TimberTech decking to avoid any damage. TimberTech recommends using TimberTech DeckCleaner™. This cleaner is safe, non-toxic, bleach-free, and biodegradable – making it ideal for seasonal cleanups, everyday spills, or stubborn spots. A solution of one part cleaner to three parts water is the ideal mix to give your composite deck the best clean.

Cleaners to Avoid

Avoid using composite deck cleaners such as:

  • Corte Clean®
  • Thompson’s® Water Seal®-Oxy Action
  • Olympic® Deck Cleaner
  • OR any other cleaners specified as composite deck cleaners in powder or liquid form, as they are not compatible with TimberTech’s current products.

Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide

Step 1: Pre-Rinse the decking

Begin by thoroughly rinsing the decking with a garden hose to remove any loose dirt and debris. We recommend using a spray nozzle to create a gentle but effective stream of water.

Step 2: Apply the Cleaning Solution

Mix the TimberTech DeckCleaner™ with water in a bucket according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Apply the solution to the decking using a soft-bristle brush or sponge. Working in small, manageable sections will ensure a thorough cleaning.

Step 3: Scrub the decking

Gently scrub the decking with the recommended brush, following the grain pattern. Avoid applying too much pressure to prevent damaging the surface.

Step 4: Rinse Thoroughly

After scrubbing, rinse the decking thoroughly with a garden hose to remove all cleaning solution residues. Make sure to rinse each section before moving on to the next to prevent the cleaner from drying on the surface.

Step 5: Dry the decking

Allow the decking to air dry completely. Avoid cleaning on a hot, sunny day to prevent the cleaner from drying too quickly, which can leave a white film on the surface.

Power Washing TimberTech decking

A power washer can be used for rinsing TimberTech decking, but it should be done with caution. Use a fan tip nozzle and a maximum pressure of 1,500 psi. Always spray in the direction of the grain pattern to avoid damaging the material.

Cleaning Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s

  • Clean in small, manageable areas: This ensures that the cleaning solution doesn’t dry on the surface.
  • Rinse thoroughly: Make sure all cleaning solution residues are washed away.
  • Use the recommended brush: This prevents damage to the decking.

Don’ts

  • Don’t use a stiff, natural fiber deck brush: This can dull the surface of TimberTech composite decking.
  • Don’t let the cleaner dry on the surface: This can cause a white film that is difficult to remove.
  • Don’t clean in direct sunlight: The heat may cause the cleaner to dry before you’ve rinsed it away.

Maintaining TimberTech Decking

Regular maintenance of TimberTech decking involves more than just cleaning. Here are some additional tips to keep your decking in top condition:

  • Inspect Regularly: Check your decking periodically for signs of damage or wear. Address any issues promptly to prevent further deterioration.
  • Protect from Damage: Avoid placing heavy objects against the decking or using harsh chemicals that could cause damage.
  • Trim Plant Growth: Ensure that plants and shrubs are not touching the decking, as they can trap moisture and cause mold growth.

Proactive Deck Maintenance Tips

After you’ve taken the proper steps to clean your TimberTech deck, here are some proactive steps you can take to extend the life of your deck:

  • Avoid leaving rubber-backed mats, tarps, pool toys, and other nonabsorbent items on the deck for long periods, as they may contain chemicals or plasticizers that can discolor the decking surface.
  • Products like sunscreen and insect repellent may contain chemicals that can alter the surface of TimberTech.
  • Metal shovels or plastic shovels with a metal edge can damage the surface of a TimberTech Deck or Porch. Use non-metal shovels to clear snow.
  • Like many surfaces in winter, TimberTech Deck or Porch products can become slippery in freezing weather. Most ice melt products containing calcium chloride can be used without damaging the surface, but they may leave a white residue that can be cleaned using the recommended cleaning guidelines. Avoid using rock salt and other abrasive ice melt products.

Discontinued Specialty TimberTech Decking: Cleaning Guidelines

For TimberTech’s discontinued collections such as ReliaBoard, TwinFinish, Earthwood, Floorizon, and DockSider, different cleaning instructions apply. These uncapped composite deckings require specific cleaners like Wash Safe Spray and Clean Composite, Resist Mist Composite Deck Cleaner, Corte Clean®, and SuperDeck Composite Deck Cleaner. We recommend using a medium stiffness nylon bristle deck brush for these products.
